Foster Care

FamilyAt FIS we believe it is our duty to protect each child’s right to a loving, caring and stable family life. Our preferred option is to provide the services necessary to create a safe, healthy and nurturing environment within the biological family. But FIS recognizes that there are times when parents are unable to sufficiently improve conditions in the home and placement of the child in foster care then becomes necessary.

When this occurs, the FIS Foster Care Program offers foster parents the training, resources, mentoring and therapeutic visits they need to create a successful care environment. We also make it a priority to maintain productive communication between foster families, birth parents, foster children, county agencies, the court system and health care providers.

At the community level, the FIS Foster Care Program advocates strongly for our children and works to strengthen the child welfare system through specialized support services and liaison work. We encourage our foster families to help the child welfare system develop more workable policies, programs and practices. By involving families in the process, they have an increased commitment to its success.

What is Family Intervention Services Foster Care?
As part of our mission to appropriately place foster children in Northern New Jersey, FIS evaluates, trains, and assists families in meeting the Division of Youth & Family Services (DYFS) standards required for licensure as approved foster homes. Following careful analysis and consideration, FIS places each foster child with the family best suited to meet his or her individual needs. Once a child is placed, FIS follows up with support services, which can include individual and family therapy, case management, 24-hour crisis response and educational training.

FIS has two foster care programs. The specific services offered by FIS and DYFS vary within these programs.

  1. Therapeutic foster care for emotionally disturbed youths ages 5 to 21
  2. Services for infants and toddlers
